Data-driven farming: how information helps fertilize better

Proper fertilization has never been a matter of routine. What worked one season doesn’t always work the next, because neither the soil nor the crop are the same every year. The difference is that today we have more information than ever, and if we use it wisely, that information allows us to make better decisions: less expenditure on inputs, higher yields, and nutrition tailored to what the plant really needs.

Know the soil and the plant before applying

Every solid fertilizer program begins with an analysis. Analyzing the soil is the only way to know what is actually available to the plant and what limitations exist. Not all soils respond the same: texture, previous management, irrigation water, or even the climate of the area all play a role.

 

An analysis can show, for example, whether the phosphorus shown in the results is in a usable form or if it is blocked. It also reveals whether an excessively high pH prevents the absorption of micronutrients, or if the soil’s cation exchange capacity limits the effectiveness of the applied fertilizers.

 

A foliar analysis complements this diagnosis, which indicates whether what is applied actually reaches the plant. Comparing what is in the soil with what the crop absorbs allows you to adjust the program on the fly. It’s not enough to simply apply; the important thing is to verify that the plant is utilizing it.

Stop fertilizing by calendar

For years, fertilizers were applied according to fixed dates or inherited practices. Today we know that this approach isn’t always the best. More and more technicians and farmers are using fertility maps, absorption curves, and models that combine climate, soil, and crop data.

 

The goal isn’t to apply more, but to apply it better. An excess of nitrogen, for example, can be as harmful as a deficiency: it reduces quality, increases the risk of pests, and generates economic losses. With information at hand, you can adjust the exact dose and apply it when it’s due.

 

Consider zinc during flowering. It’s not about applying it “just in case,” but rather applying it at the right time if analyses show a deficiency. The same goes for nitrogen: reducing the dose by 20 kilos can mean considerable savings and avoid an imbalance in the plant that affects fruit set or ripening.

Technology that makes the invisible visible

New digital tools have made this way of working accessible to more farmers. Today, it’s possible to receive an analysis report on a mobile phone, check product compatibility in an app, or access historical data to compare how a soil is evolving season after season.

 

The use of drones has opened the door to seeing things that previously went unnoticed. Multispectral images detect differences in vigor or chlorophyll that indicate nutritional problems even before they are visible to the naked eye. This information, cross-referenced with soil data, allows for planning specific, rather than generalized, applications.

Sensors are also being incorporated that measure soil moisture, conductivity, or temperature in real time. With this data, it’s possible to decide whether to advance, delay, or change an application. Even irrigation can be adjusted to improve nutrient absorption.

 

Technology alone doesn’t solve anything. What matters is how it’s interpreted. Our job is to translate this data into practical recommendations that farmers can apply with confidence.

Less input, more performance

One of the great advantages of working with data is that it optimizes resources. It’s not about applying less for the sake of it, but rather applying what the plant needs, without excess or deficiency. This reduces losses due to leaching, volatilization, or blockage and increases the efficiency of each fertilizer unit.

 

In intensive crops, this precision translates into more kilos per hectare, better quality, and a longer post-harvest life. In extensive crops, it represents considerable savings: applying phosphorus only to the plots that truly need it avoids unnecessary expenses without affecting production.

 

Every data-driven adjustment has a direct impact on profitability, which explains why more and more farmers are taking this step.

The role of the manufacturer: to accompany and personalize

In this scenario, a manufacturer’s role is not limited to producing quality fertilizers. It also involves supporting farmers and offering solutions that fit their needs.

 

When we design a formula, we consider not only its chemical composition, but also how it behaves in different soil conditions, how it mixes with other products, and how it fits into a fertigation program.

 

In addition, we maintain close contact with the field. We resolve questions about compatibility, application timing, or dosage adjustments. If data changes mid-season, the fertilization plan must also be adaptable, and to that end, we offer ongoing technical support.
